Eastern State Penitentiary was a Pennsylvanian state correction facility that operated from 1829 until 1971. It was designated a National Historical Landmark in 1965. Today visitors can tour it as a museum.
Originally intended to be a true penitentiary in which inmates were confined solitarily as a means to rehabilitation. However due to the cost and logistics of maintaining single-inmate cells, that system was largely deprecated by the 1870s and completely abandoned by 1913.
ESP was designed as a hub-and-spoke facility with all cellblocks leading to a central "surveillance hub." When it opened, it was designed to house 256 inmates, but at its peak in the early 20th century, there about 1,700 inmates. It was closed in 1971.

"The Museum's DC-3 was built in 1940 for American Airlines. After World War II, it was purchased by Trans-Texas Airways, the predecessor to Continental Airlines. It later flew for an airline in the northeastern United States before Continental purchased the aircraft in the 1980s and flew it as a public relations tool. Continental Airlines donated the aircraft to the Lone Star Flight Museum in 2004 when their CEO, Gordon Bethune, was inducted into the Texas Aviation Hall of Fame."
