Paris’s Palais Garnier was inaugurated in 1875 after some 14 years of construction to house the Paris Opera. It was conceived shortly after an assassination attempt on Napoleon III in 1858, which prompted the need for an opera house that could provide a more secure entrance for a head of state. It was designed and built by little-known architect Charles Garnier after winning an architectural design competition for the commission. It is the setting for the 1910 novel The Phantom of the Opera and the eponymous 1986 musical.
